This is just wonderful," Sara Cailler said Saturday as she watched daughter Caitlin try for the stratosphere on a swing set. But even by the demanding standards and expectations here, there's something eye-popping about the $1.5 million Adventure Playground that opened last weekend at the South Germantown Recreational Park. Playgrounds have become extremely sophisticated in the past generation, and in Montgomery County, they win awards. And the hollow-sounding bops and oooms echoing through the air are notes coming from outdoor musical instruments. Instead, how about an ivy-decorated medieval castle with suspension bridge, curved superslides and a 30-foot sea serpent? Or a Spanish galleon complete with gangplank and a crow's nest scaled for toddlers? Across the way is a hexagonal spacenet and a boulder wall for climbing. Forget the puny square sandbox (always missing half its sand), the fireman's pole (always too short), the sagging, creaking swing sets, the jolting seesaws sharp with splinters.
